  • It’s your media you do what you want with it.

Pick a busy movie with a bunch of stuff going on, and then pick a really dark movie.

Try different encodings with each one of those. You’re playing a game of time versus quality. And you keep in mind, the electricity for those encodes isn’t free either.

Try them with a fixed bit rate, try them with the two pass. If the fixed rate doesn’t look good try bumping the rate up. You’ll get a feel for it eventually.

Back when I was hard up for disc, I made everything 1080p HEVC single pass constant rate. I don’t even remember exactly what the bit rate was but I would just encode everything and then watch a sample out of it. If one of them turned out bad I would reincode it with better settings.

Dual pass will get you a little smaller and better output, But it takes forever, and you’re sitting there burning watts all night long.

In the end you just need to fiddle with it, and weigh the output versus your resources.

  • Different people have different needs.

If someone has a lot of time and not a lot of money re encoding video is a decent answer.

I’ve been there and done that before.

Replacing (or adding a 10TB USB to your ) single 2 tb drive isn’t a horrible idea. It’ll take you quite a while to go through that 10 tb. In the meantime you look toward getting an old case and some kind of modest motherboard and setting up an Unraid. It’s a journey, and unless you are made of cash you’re not going to get to your endpoint all in one jump.

Unraid is budget friendly because you can add whatever size disc you want to do it, It supports a parity drive so you have some support against failure. The only truly difficult part is that the parity drive must be as big as the largest drive in the box.

In the end only you can decide what works for you. If you want to re-encode your stuff, 2 pass is best. You are going to lose quality, that’s unavoidable, But if you’re watching it on a TV 12 ft away, You’re going to forget about any quality as soon as you get in grossed in anything you’re watching.

Shiiit I had to block people at work from running bearshare and limewire

We didn’t really have the right equipment for it. It was early enough in Windows that I couldn’t adequately secure the developers from running crap on their workstations.

I eventually managed to get our antivirus to flag the DLLs for the applications as viruses, that caused a little bit of an uproar.

  • mail with your new address whenever you move

We don’t do that. Honestly mail theft here is bad enough, I’m not certain that it’d be a good idea.

Then our ID’s aren’t even free. You’d think that’s all taxes, but it’s not.

You need to go to the department of motor vehicles with a bunch of proof that you exist just to get a walker’s id. (base state ID card)

Getting an MVA ID without other documents is hard Getting other documents without an MVA ID is hard Getting government documents without MVA ID and other documents is impossible.

Used to be the MVA would let you get a license pretty easily. RealID chilled that the fuck out. Now you need to get a birth certificate from your state of birth, (which might require cross-country travel without a drivers license)

  • To get a state ID, (RealID™ you currently need a birth certificate, social security card, and or a passport and mail/bills with your address.

The cards aren’t free. If you’re poor, or your parents don’t have their shit together you might not have all of that.

Getting a copy of your birth certificate is not generally free. In many states getting a copy of your birth certificate requires you to go back to the state you’re born in and go to the health department there to get a copy.

They would usually like to see your state ID.

To get a replacement social security card, you have to go through the same kind of scenario. I think they are free though.

If you are from a rural area you need to drive. Everyone around you drives you have family that drives. The poor innercity? They don’t need to drive, can make it through most of not all of life without a license, or by having family member step in to help.

It’s a tax on the poor non-driving. They also like to close polling areas in the poor areas because they have a hard time getting to remote polling places. Then they like to crack down on people giving people standing in line water.

These particularly affected poor area disproportionately black.

  • Housing the homeless is a good idea, but doing it in a random, hap-hazard way is dangerous.

Govt takes over a block of brownstones, and throws a bunch of random people off the street with abuse/violence/psychological issues in them as fast as possible for six months, it’s a recipe for disaster.

You have to be careful about housing people as a government, you become (at least partially) responsible for their actions. Somebody starts cooking meth on an end unit and all of a sudden you have a fire that kills 30 people.

When the govt plans housing they can take flammability, safety, and location into consideration. If you’re just buying up slums to rehab, most of that goes out the window.

    ^^^

Shit, even if I really wanted to help someone panhandling, it’s not like I ever have any cash on me.

high correlation between mental illness and homelessness

Probably as much cause as effect. Same with the substance abuse, everything in life is shit, you don’t have enough to get off the street but you can afford to get high enough not to care in the moment.

  • If you buy one today, sure, a few years ago, before their QC issues and mush really started fucking with the company, they weren’t an awful deal.

Even the cyberdumpsters, you could have been on a waiting list for 3-4 years and paid a solid downpayment.

What happens if mush buys out Rivian, all those retroactively turn to shit?

They’re also probably trapped in a loan. That 50-60k car was financed. it’s now worth 1/3 of it’s original cost. A lot of people who shouldn’t have spent 50k on a car will because monthly payments make it affordable to them, now they sell it and can only replace it with a hundai.
