There was a brief period where he was popular in more left leaning circles because criticism of the Patriot Act and the War in Iraq was not popular, and he was genuinely one of the first and loudest voices.
The concerning this is that he is cheering for things that he would have actively decried then. Before Trump was the nominee, he was not pro Trump. There is something strange with these MAGA cult figures - where their beliefs are subsumed into a devotion to their God figure.
