help-circle

  • Yeah, I try regathering my donations to a non-profit that helps but what little I can give is lost in the mess.

It seems like the best option

    • they provide the most beds of any shelter
    • most meals of any shelter
    • help getting jobs
    • and probably much more

As long as someone is willing to come in and gets there before it fills up ……

  • Far right politicians are not mindless dupes. They are self-centeredly hopping onto whatever bandwagon they think will best further their personal interest. They are not fooled, they are malicious. They may be only thinking of their immediate self but they are helping build a larger combined evil. If they had any empathy or morals, any backbone, this would not happen. The thing is that simple greed for power should fuel many of our checks and balances but these people can’t even stand up for that. They deserved to be booed and then some.

That’s different from voters, many of whom might be low information and/or manipulated by misinformation, echo chambers and peer pressure. You’re right that a more constructive approach could help them

  • Yeah, there’s that too. A decade or more ago, our local paper ran an expose on the scammers, but they kept it reasonably constructive, giving equal space to strategies for identifying those in actual need.

For my teens, I kept it simple

    • someone actively soliciting you in a high traffic area is likely a scammer
    • someone sitting quietly, trying to “shrink” away from attention, whether they have their hand out or not, is more likely in need

  • Same here on a few bad experiences trying to help

    • a guy asked for money to get a meal combo from McDonalds. I bought him the meal combo, so he keyed my car for not giving him cash
    • I suppose I can see this being taken the wrong way, but I tried emptying my pockets a few times, only for them to throw the counts on the ground. After that I started noticing homeless with coins on the ground around them

Realistically, it doesn’t matter anymore since I almost never have cash. They seem to know that world has gone too, as I’m rarely solicited anymore

  • It’s not that it hits the the wrong person, but that it is being applied blindly without regard to whether it hits the wrong people, on the assumption that there is waste without even looking for it and worst of all on the assumption that agencies implementing policy they have a personal disagreement with are all “waste, fraud and abuse”. And to top it all off, most of these firings are illegal through executive overreach, union busting, lack of any sort of due process or human respect, and implemented through a national security breach violating government privacy and security policies.

  • According to the Saga of Erik the Red, Erik spent his three years of exile exploring this land. … When Erik returned to Iceland after his exile had expired, he is said to have brought with him stories of “Greenland”. Erik purposefully gave the land a more appealing name than “Iceland” as “people would be attracted to go there if it had a favorable name”, per Erik’s own words.[19][20] Erik knew that the success of any settlement in Greenland would need the support of as many people as possible. Erik’s salesmanship of Greenland proved successful in…. as 1,043 years later a widely reviled politician who insisted he never he’d close personal relations with a couch, was quoted to exclaim in surprise “it’s fucking cold up there. Nobody told me that”

  • Yes, that was it thanks

Certainly a big criticism of democrats has been they get nothing done but if you look at the legislation they really did get some far reaching improvements codified …… but then it takes years to implement so no one sees the results and the next president can cancel programs before anything is done.

One of the programs I was really frustrated by was building out EV chargers. Republicans had started complaining about nothing being done and the explanation was partly that it required states to figure out how to use it, but this could have been transformative for the EV transition. Now very little was done, the current president cancelled the program and started reneging on its commitments

Last summer I went on a 1,200 mile road trip in an EV and had no problems. But that was in the NorthEast where a lot of charging infrastructure has been built out. We really need to jump start this in a lot of the US where they don’t have the population for it to be immediately profitable. People need to think of it like highways, we don’t just build highways between cities where there’s enough population to make it worthwhile: we know that we’re all stronger with easier travel everywhere. Similarly, you should be able to refuel your vehicle everywhere you can travel with it
