  • Not having enough cash to eat food until your next payday is dystopian no matter how it’s done. I think this is more to hide the fact that Door Dash is charging way too much for their service. I’ve never used it but I’ve had friends quit using the app because of the realization that they’re paying $50 for McDonalds. Turning the checkout price into $12.50, that you’ll be paying four times over, reduces the sticker shock and avoids people getting a reality check.

  • I watched this video essay by Benn Jordan on American Capitalism that suggests the ultra wealthy are trading their net worth for control. Companies don’t want to make more money, they want to have more control over your life. They’ll buy out every competing company and give out their products or services at a loss even if it means losing a billion dollars a year with no plan to turn a profit anytime soon. They do it with the goal of becoming the only company that provides something people rely on.

Musk’s net worth has dropped $100 billion but he now controls what government programs get funding and who gets government jobs. He traded his net worth for control.

  • Much of the economy only works because people believe in it. The UK had an economic crisis in 2022 when Liz Truss, Prime Minister for 50 days, passed a budget so terrible it tanked their stock market.

The budget included enormous tax cuts for the highest tax brackets, resulting in a £60 billion budget deficit, all while there was a cost of living crisis for the UK’s poorest. UK stocks plummeted so much over the thought that the Prime Minster had no idea how to manage the economy that it caused “safe” investments, like retirement funds, to start failing. The UK central bank stepped in and said they’d print money in order to keep safe investments liquid which likely stopped the UK from experiencing a great depression. Liz Truss resigned because of the fallout.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Trump hinting that the government might not honour their debts could collapse the economy.
