I almost added a joke about it being a photo of 2 steam power plants, but figured that might be a bit too obscure for [email protected]

I’m out and about right now so I can’t look it up, but most likely during the 50s. The United States transitioned away from steam in the 50s and was largely transitioned to diesel by the early-mid-60s
Edit: this xitter xeet says 1957 which seems very plausible (and applied a filter to the photo for whatever reason) Also while reverse image searching in hopes of finding more details I found this very post but federated to dbzer0.com
In a similar sense, this is one of my favorite historical photos. A nuclear reactor delivered by steam locomotive!
They always have used hardware closely related to existing workstation or PC hardware, but the difference is now they try so much less hard to hide it, through crossplay, lack of platform exclusives, and just less trying to innovate on how the games are played. Part of it is that game inputs have largely been standardized, part of it is that the more similar to a bog standard PC the console is, the easier it is for developers to port their existing games, and part of it might just be that platforms aren’t feeling pushed to innovate as much
It’s absolutely incredible how big the gaming industry is now. Where 20 years ago it was extremely male, and mostly limited to 20-30 year olds now it’s everyone! Children and retirees, men and women and everything inbetween or further out to the fringes! And I’m not just talking phone games (which is a gigantic market on its own) at the MSP I work at we’ve had retired folks bring in gaming computers for service or just drop off older gaming computers for recycling
The funniest part is that the best selling video game of all time (Minecraft) currently has an MSRP of less than $30, which technically gets you 2 games because Microsoft/Mojang maintain 2 completely separate codebases for Minecraft (Java edition and bedrock edition) and has to design, program, test and debug everything twice, once for each codebase
I also saw one analysis that suggested the increased cost of buying could decrease trade and therefore shrink the economies the US usually buys from, depressing the shrunken economies dollar values and effectively cancelling out the cost of the tarrif
We have a switch 1 and the game price has been the driving factor preventing us from investing more in the platform. The games are too expensive, go on sale too infrequently and not for low enough prices. Just not the ecosystem for my family right now
That was the wildest part of that leak is seeing that his public and private personas are identical. I’m not sure if that’s comforting or terrifying to know
There are specifically tax deductions for taxes paid on your primary residence, so theoretically there is a higher cost to owning multiple properties, however this cost is simply too low to be much of a deterrence
All he has to do is apply sufficient political pressure upon the governor to make the pardon happen. It’s more work for a state level concern but ultimately it’s plausible if the current Republican administration is sufficiently motivated
Wait when did I stumble into a Rimworld sub?
Of course, you can never go wrong with the old faithful “one lung, one kidney, amputate both arms and legs and replace with pegs then release back to their people”
Probably with an illegal government bailout, either in the form of an incredibly generous to Tesla purchase order or just cold hard cash
In hindsight I should have just threatened to walk out over the ESPs but meh, next time. Realistically with my current insane commute this car won’t last too long so it’ll probably only be a two or three years before I’m car shopping again
It’s kinda a win/win either republicans buy Tesla’s in droves and help accelerate the decline of oil or Musk makes Tesla untouchable by anyone from any corner of the political spectrum and the entire company collapses (which might have the added benefit of forcing more electric adoption because Tesla receives a large portion of it’s revenue through selling emissions credits to auto manufacturers that refuse to build more efficient vehicles)
Bro last time I bought a car they tried to sell me $6k worth of extended service plans…on a $12k car then we’re pushy as hell while I was saying “no I do not want extended service plans, I just want a fucking car”
I enjoy my current job but the management and benefits suck badly enough that I’ll be hopping away ASAP.
My last job paid a bit less than they ideally should have but was super chill, had amazing management and was super flexible, but their new owners laid everyone off to relocate the HQ
I’m currently negotiating with my old boss as they want to bring me back so we’ll see if I can make this all work out in my favor…
[notes .ca instance] That’s more y’all’s thing
I got that reference!
But but…the Republicans are the party of Lincoln!
Except Bidens performance in that infamous debate was horrendous. Anyone who’s had loved ones with dementia can see it. To try to pretend otherwise is silly. Biden has clearly declined significantly since 2020.
You can also see it similarly with Trump with a much slower rate of progress, where in 2016 he was far more coherent in his word salads and seemed to actually maintain a steady train of thought while he spoke, now he just babbles and doesn’t seem to have any clear idea of what he’s said nor what he’s going to say
