The more charitable view is that Congressman Booker is reaponding to criticism by demonstrating a level of action not seen outside an Independent senator and a handful of other house members.

I ain’t rooting against his effort one bit in the face of the GOP, even under the most cynical interpretations of recouperation.

People like Darwin and Copernicus and such were all commissioned by the church to develop and research their work.

What happened was there became a growing body of work that did not align with the church that could not be reconciled. They did the science, they were just subject to the demands of political power of their time.

Lincoln was a Whig before a ‘third’ party came along. The calls for a new party aren’t necessarily to form a third party. They are calls to form a party in power.

Generally these letters don’t have a limit or threshold on signatures. There were 38 readily available senators who wanted to sign the letter. This doesn’t have any procedural meaning other than an office sending a letterhead to another.

Any senators missing from the letter can now publically address it to reference their stance, or perhaps they’ve already made public statements on the matter.

The way it works is communities are hosted on the instances and when moderators do things in communities that makes people mad those people can only go to that community’s instance administrators.

And then people get really angry at instance operators and admins with differing policies and rules about content and moderation.

So those conflicts can and do drive some culture wars. (Ex: Blahaj has little tolerance for gatekeepers, .ml has no patience for american liberal politics, .world is particular about zionism, and so on.)

But otherwise except for instances that defederate from each other the perk is absolutely that instances don’t really matter for registering and posting as a user.

At most just check the instance rules before posting and you’ll probably be just fine on Lemmy.
