  • Sauce? And proof?

Karoline “Lyin’” Leavitt ain’t exactly a good source…

In 2022, Karoline Leavitt ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in New Hampshire’s 1st district, ultimately losing to the incumbent congressman Chris Pappas. The election loss was, however, not the only setback Leavitt faced. That same year, Leavitt found herself in the middle of a campaign finance scandal. In November 2022, End Citizens United, a non-governmental campaign finance committee, accused Leavitt of illegally accepting donations that exceeded the stipulated limit and never repaid her donors. “Karoline Leavitt continues to prove she’ll do whatever it takes to win this race, even if it means breaking the law,” Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United, said at the time.

Three years later, Leavitt admitted to the violation after declaring that her failed campaign owed about $200,000 in refunds to donors who contributed over the legal limits. Leavitt’s admission, however, was met with backlash from social media users who quickly reacted with criticism. “So @karolineleavitt stole the money. Campaign Funding is separate entities for a reason … If she took the money from her campaign funds, then she embezzled it, she stole it, thats a crime. Lock. Her. Up.” one person wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “When will we as a country start holding these crooks accountable?” another person questioned.

Karoline Leavitt has made a few false claims as the White House press secretary

Since assuming office as the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt has faced backlash for making misleading claims. During her first official White House briefing on January 28, 2025, Leavitt alleged that the Trump administration had blocked the release of millions of dollars meant to fund condoms in war-stricken Gaza. “DOGE and OMB also found that there was about to be $50 million taxpayer dollars that went out the door to fund condoms in Gaza. That is a preposterous waste of taxpayer money. So that’s what this pause is focused on, being good stewards of tax dollars,” Leavitt said in the press conference while defending Donald Trump’s freeze on federal grants.

Leavitt’s comment has, however, been dismissed by several experts given the lack of evidence. “It seems clear to me there was no $50 million in condoms going to Gaza. That is, at best, a mischaracterization,” Matthew Kavanagh, Director of Georgetown University’s Center for Global Health Policy and Politics, told CNN. Similarly, Jeremy Konyndyk, president of Refugees International and a former USAID official described Leavitt’s claim as “total garbage.”

The irony of Leavitt spreading misinformation hasn’t gone unnoticed, especially given her past warnings about holding the media accountable for misrepresenting the Trump administration. But perhaps this is a reminder that those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

  • You’re both right, and you both got my upvotes.

The current administration will absolutely use any unrest it can to solidify its grip, and they are, as @[email protected] mentions, looking for just such an event to declare martial law.

But @[email protected] is also correct in understanding that this process has already begun, and that retaliatory actions are not specifically analogous, especially as it’s very likely that the Reichstag fire was a false flag event engineered by the Nazis themselves as an excuse for Kristallnacht.

Will this kind of event help in the long term? I’m uncertain. On the one hand, it’s really good to see resistance take physical form with the potential to inspire further action, but on the other, it means that the right can use it as an excuse to further oppress. Since the mass media has been captured by the right, it’s most likely that the perception of this event will be tailored to reflect the latter.

So, unless this action created an impact on the GOP beyond simple property damage (like destroying lists of political opponents they’re looking to deport), I think this action will likely backfire per @the_crotch’s conclusion. However, that could be offset by the publicity inspiring further resistance on the left. And @pourous_grey_matter is very correct in understanding that we have a very small window of opportunity to act.

So kiss and make up - you’re on the same side, and celebrate the fact that you can argue about tactics publicly.

We may not have that option for much longer.

  • Thank you for the detail.

Some additional context from Snopes as to why this is so important in Oregon especially:

Conner O’Shea told journalists he started running when he saw mysterious, armed people wearing camouflage body armor jump out of an unmarked van as he was walking home from a protest in downtown Portland, Oregon, on July 15, 2020.

But his friend, Mark Pettibone, 29, was unable to escape the group of people in military fatigues that was later identified as a team of federal law enforcement agents operating under a plan by U.S. President Donald Trump to quell demonstrations against police brutality and racism in cities nationwide.

According to Pettibone’s account of the incident — which was later publicized widely in news outlets ranging from The New York Times to Fox News — the officers tossed him into the van and took him to a federal courthouse. There, he said, they held him in a cell for about 90 minutes without explaining for what crimes he was suspected, nor identifying themselves as law enforcement personnel.

His alleged experience, as well as reports of viral videos purportedly depicting similar actions on behalf of federal agents in Portland (which we explain below), outraged critics of the Trump administration in July 2020 — including Oregon and Portland officials who said the federal officers and their militarized tactics were not welcome in Portland and violated the rights of citizens.

Personal reports from a friend of mine on the front lines in Portland corroborate this tactic - the group she was with was followed home by one of the vans described above.

Her mugshot (she had been in the system before) then appeared in a line-up banner of “Antifa Criminals” that started circulating around right-wing websites. As she’s trans, she ended up having to move and go underground because of the death threats.

If you’re in any way part of a population that Trump is targeting, be ready to defend yourself. Remember that once you’re in the system, not only will the cops have your data, but it will be leaked to the alt-right thugs willing to do the dirty work the cops won’t.
