The basic rule is that you can say what you want (and people can call you what they want for it!).

It would be polite to self moderate to an extent. No point getting the instance owners in to legal hot water. That’s a massively higher bar than Reddit has set however. Chatting about and admiring Luigi is completely fine.

It also allows for mutual support. We support the weak because we know what it feels like to be weak. I have been helped by the empathy of others. I have chosen to let my empathy help others in turn.

Empathy ties us together. It allows us to reach FAR beyond what we could alone. Empathy is both the glue that holds society together and the oil that stops the whole construction seizing up.

I would argue that empathy is one of the most critical advantages we have, as humans. It is fundamental to the super tribe effect. That allowed us to bypass the Dunbar limit and form societies larger than a tribe.

It’s also not soft. Endurance hunting relies on it. When your prey flees into cover, you need to follow. You need to put yourself into its head, to figure out where it went. That is empathic.

Your life must be cold and distant without empathy.

Back-coiling is a game changer. Every other coil is reversed, leaving a net zero in coils. It just pulls out straight.

The engineering requirements are also a lot higher. It’s the difference between a nut, bolt and spanner, compared to a welding machine.

I think Victorian England figured that out. It was cheaper to help the poor than try to police them.

It’s context dependent. Some fields are inherently batch work. E.g. TV. In these cases, unions can allow contractors to set pay baselines etc, without a race to the bottom. Otherwise big companies can try and play us off against each other.

E.g. BECTU (uk tv union) organised a strike against a company last year, after they changed their invoice pay time to 3 months.
