I talk to a lot of people who think voter ID requirements are no big deal, because they have always had an ID. They cannot fathom anyone living a life that doesn’t conform to their experiences.

There’s no justice in his death. Only an end to the madness. Justice would be him sharing a cell with his cronies, enablers, and bosses.

Capitalism is not just commerce. Capitalism is the idea that you can buy control of a market and use the leverage of your investments (capital) to gain outsized profits off the value of the labors of others.

For sure, there are capitalists in the black market drug trade, but there are also socialists (where the laborers have a greater protected share of the value they generate) and fascists, where violent force is the leverage used to gain profits. I’m not suggesting the black market was good, but it did have the side effect that corporations and politicians could not publicly use their positions of power to capture the markets.

Your local weed dealer is probably out of business, or has graduated to other illicit sales. It’s the same thing that happened to mom and pop shops in every town when superstores and the internet crowded them out of business.

Capitalism never made anything better.

I think the worst part about this story is that you know that kid’s parents are exactly the bigots you think they are, and now the child has learned a valuable lesson that they are completely alone, unloved, and no one will help them.

It’s terrible that Florida is doing this to teachers, but it’s worse for the kids.

There’s no “I was joking” excuse for inciting violence. Being a politician means you are responsible for the consequences of your words. Or at least, it would if we had a functioning justice system.

Little bit of all of the above, plus it creates a mechanism for dealing with enemies. Anyone can be sent to the concentration camps in El Salvador without trial, because they’re already doing it.

Bullshit. Conservativism has always been a carefully constructed narrative built around the identity of the contemporaneous conservative leadership. Twas always thus, and always will be. Step 1: Define the self. Step 2: decide if the status quo benefits the self. If it does, then it must be conserved in the guise of stoicism, tradition, or precaution. If it does not, then it must be changed to prevent the collapse of civil society.

Abortion is an excellent example of exactly this phenomenon, and I’m glad you brought it up. Christian nationalism is another example of a version of conservativism that is tailor-made to fit the identity of the Christian conservative. There isn’t any sort of conservative that doesn’t pick and choose their priorities based on who they are and how they are directly affected.

This is what it means to be a conservative. There are no fundamentally conservative values. Each conservative gets to redefine what conservativism is based on their own identity. It’s never about achieving anything more than a personal win.

All additional valid reasons not to live there.

I work remotely, so I can do my job from anywhere. Cost of living is cheap in Mississippi, and I would save considerably even factoring in the cost for private school for my kids.

I still would never move to Mississippi.

I mean, Henry Ford was also a Nazi. But he’s also been dead for some time now, and the current leadership at Ford isn’t actively engaged in a violent overthrow of the government.
